Mood Making Locations

My family have finally become accustomed to an odd habit of mine. My laptop rarely leaves my side. Grocery store? Dinner out? Karate studio? It doesn’t matter where I’m going, my laptop is sure to follow. At this point, it’s like a security blanket for me. I often find myself with a free hour as I drive my kids from here to there. I take advantage of any opportunity to get in a little writing, editing, and marketing. While I’ve certainly written plenty in my car, waiting in a dance studio parking lot, there are several locations that I thanked my lucky stars I had my laptop, because the energy was just right. Generally, this happens when the location is historic, or the music creates a calm vibe. Two such places are the Mirror Room Bar in Alexandria Louisiana, and the Press Club in Albuquerque New Mexico.

My productivity at the Press Club, in particular, is monumental. That log cabin, nestled on a grassy hill, holds magic. It’s unlike anywhere else. You can feel the age as you settle in. That building hugs me and then holds me lightly every time I take a seat there. Generations of writers and reporters have graced the location with their creative writing energy. I bask in it.
